AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

What is AEO — Answer Engine Optimization?

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is helping AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok) see your business and describe it accurately, and working to make you the answer they give when customers ask. SEO made you findable on Google; AEO works to make you the answer AI gives — and tracks your visibility in those answers over time.

In plain terms.

AEO means Answer Engine Optimization — working to make your business the answer AI assistants and search engines give when a customer asks them for help. SEO got you onto Google's list of blue links so people could click through; AEO works to get you named inside the AI answer itself, where customers increasingly decide before they ever reach your site.

Your customers are starting to ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or Grok "who's the best [vet/dentist/audiologist] near me?" If AI doesn't know you — or gets you wrong — you're invisible in the conversation that's replacing search. AEO helps AI see you and say the right things about you, and works to make you the answer it gives. We track it: your visibility in AI answers over time, and the visits AI sends you, in your own analytics.

Lost in the fog?

AI changed how customers find businesses, and it changed fast. For a busy owner that can feel like fog: new tools every week, no map. Our job is to clear it — measure where you stand in AI answers, fix what keeps you out of them, and show you what moved.

The answer-engine era: from ten blue links to one answer.

For twenty years, search meant a page of ten blue links, and the game was ranking among them. That era is ending. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, and Google's own AI Overviews now read the web for your customers and hand back a single, synthesized answer — often with one recommendation attached and the source links tucked underneath. Your customer reads the answer; they rarely click through to compare.

That shifts the whole objective. It is no longer enough to appear on a results page a customer scans. You have to be the business the answer names. To be named, an answer engine has to be able to read your business, understand what you do, trust that it's accurate, and judge you the best fit for the question. AEO is the discipline of earning all four. It's not a trick or a keyword; it's making your business legible, trustworthy, and recommendable to machines that now sit between you and the customer.

AEO vs SEO: what actually changed.

It doesn't replace SEO — it extends it. Same fundamentals, higher stakes. Clean, fast, well-structured sites still matter, and answer engines read the same web; the prize has just changed — from ranking on a list to being the source the AI cites, trusts, and names. The onboarding audit does not query ChatGPT or Gemini live to see whether they name you today — that live citation tracking is a membership tool, and ranking you against named rivals is Compete. The Compete engine is built but deliberately not deployed, and no launch date is set. Here's the shift, side by side:

How AEO differs from traditional SEO, across six dimensions.

GoalRank in the list of resultsBe the business the answer names and recommends
AudienceA person scanning a results pageAn answer engine reading on the person's behalf
The winning moveKeywords, backlinks, higher positionLegible entities, structured data, llms.txt, accurate facts

Biggest new riskBeing on page twoAI describing you wrong — or not knowing you exist
How you prove itRankings and trafficCitations, recommendation share, and the visits AI sends you via GA4/GSC

In Google Search, when an AI summary appears, people click a result far less — about 8% of the time vs. 15% without one (Pew Research Center, 2025). More customers now decide inside the answer, before they ever reach a website. Market figures, not our results.

The six pillars of AEO.

See it

Where do you stand in AI answers right now?

You can't fix what you can't see. We measure how ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok answer questions about your business today — whether they cite you, name a competitor, or get you wrong.

How we do it: weekly AI-visibility tracking, a membership tool.

Win it

Become the answer AI gives.

Being seen isn't enough; you have to be the recommendation. We make your business legible to answer engines with answer-led content, structured data, and an llms.txt file they read.

How we do it: answer-led content, structured data and llms.txt.

Protect it (Not sold today)

No AI lies or bad reviews about you.

AI can repeat a wrong fact or an unfair review as if it were settled truth. Watching what engines say about you, and keeping your reviews and listings accurate, is not part of any plan we sell today — so we are not going to sell it to you as though it were.

How it would work: review handling and AI-reputation monitoring. (Not sold today)

Prove it

The AI visits you get, tracked over time.

Visibility only matters if it brings customers. Connect Google Analytics and Search Console and the Visibility page in the member portal reads them back: AI-referral visits over a recent window, alongside the citations we track. It reports visits and citations; it does not claim which visits became customers. Until you connect them it says so rather than showing a number. The weekly email is the AI-visibility half: your score and what moved.

How we do it: GA4/GSC measurement on the portal's Visibility page, plus a weekly AI-visibility email.

Outpace it (No launch date)

Beat competitors in AI visibility.

AI recommends a short list, and you want to be on it. Membership measures your own share of AI answers and, on the Visibility page, shows whether a named rival you enter is cited for the same prompts we track for you. The Compete engine is built but deliberately not deployed, and no launch date is set.

How it would work: competitive benchmarking. (No launch date)

Trust it

Accessible builds trust AI (and the law) reward.

Answer engines — and a growing body of law — reward businesses that are accessible to everyone. WCAG-AA conformance is both the right thing to do and a signal that helps AI trust and recommend you.

How we do it: an accessibility read for common WCAG Level A barriers, with AA as the standard we build to.

Who AEO is for.

AEO matters most for local, trust-driven service businesses whose customers ask AI "who's the best near me?" — and then act on the answer. We publish per-industry guides on what AI visibility means, the exact queries customers ask, and how the six pillars apply:

Audiology

AEO for audiology practices

Be the clinic AI names for "best audiologist near me" — on a site hearing- and vision-impaired patients can use.

Dental

AEO for dental practices

Be the office AI names for "emergency dentist near me" and "dental implants cost" — per location, per service.

Veterinary

AEO for veterinary practices

Be the clinic AI names for "emergency vet near me" — accurately, the moment an owner needs you.
